Meet the 2024-25 Executive Team

President

Chathuranga De Silva

I'm a PhD student in the Dept. of AFNS under the supervision of Dr. Malinda Thilakarathna. My research focus is on the belowground nitrogen transfer from legumes to non-legumes. I hold a Master's degree in molecular and applied microbiology from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. I love reaching out to peers with associations such as ALES GSA. In my spare time, I enjoy the peace of nature by traveling, hiking, camping and capturing landscapes.

Sonia Navvuru

I’m Sonia Navvuru, a passionate and inquisitive researcher specializing in Plant Breeding and Genetics. I’m currently pursuing my PhD in Plant Science under the guidance of Dr. Habibur Rahman. My research is dedicated to advancing agricultural science, with a focus on enhancing clubroot resistance in canola—one of the world’s most vital crops. Through my work, I aim to develop innovative solutions that safeguard crops against disease by seamlessly integrating traditional breeding methods with cutting-edge molecular techniques. I’m driven by curiosity and a deep commitment to exploring the latest advancements in genomics, molecular biology, and plant breeding. My goal is to contribute to the resilience and sustainability of essential crops, ensuring a secure food future. When I’m not immersed in research or talking to plants, you’ll likely find me lost in the pages of a novel, exploring new worlds and ideas.
