Workshop 2

Designing your talk or poster to tell the strongest story by Dr. Carol Frost

April 2, 2025 | 9 AM to 10 AM | Alberta Room, Lister Conference Centre
Using your scientific talk or poster to tell a story is harder than simply laying out your introduction, methods, results, and discussion. However, by including elements of storytelling, you can engage your audience on an emotional level, rather than just on an intellectual level, which will help your presentation or poster to be memorable and have maximum impact. This workshop will answer the question: what is a “story” in science? You will practise summarizing the story from your own work differently for two different audiences. We will then consider slide, figure, and poster design elements that support the telling of a focused story. Participants will come away with techniques for reducing clutter, drawing the audience’s attention to key features of their data, and using visual design to support the telling of a strong story. Bring a notebook and pen to be able to participate fully!
