This is a fantastic opportunity to meet fellow students and gather essential information to help you navigate your academic journey. You will also have the chance to meet Dr. Nat Kav, our Associate Dean (Academic) & Associate Dean (Graduate Studies), along with our wonderful staff members from the ALES Administration Office: Charlotte Bowman, Stephanie Dickie, and Emma Bitner.

This year has been incredibly productive for ALES GSA, thanks to the dedication and active participation of our executives and members. We have successfully organized a series of events that have enriched our academic and social experiences within the faculty. Together, let us reflect on our achievements and discuss our future plans.

During the meeting, we will review the highlights of our past events, share feedback and suggestions, and engage in open discussions about the future direction of ALES GSA. Additionally, we will introduce ALES GSA elections for 2024-2025. This is a great opportunity for you to get involved in the leadership of our organization and make a meaningful contribution to our community. We highly encourage your attendance and participation as your input and perspectives are important to us.

Dear ALES Grad Students,

Join us on Friday Feb 2, 2024 12-1pm for a panel discussion on your health and wellbeing! Panel speakers include Suman Varghese (psychologist from U of A Counselling and Clinical Services), Dr. Scott Swartzenruber (Garneau Chiropractic health clinic), and Dr. Rene Dery (Director of Research and Innovation from CNAS).

The workshop will include topics of managing stress, anxious thoughts and perfectionism, physical health, your GSA health benefits and insurance coverage, and health and academic responsibilities and how to navigate them. There will also be a Q&A session at the end where you can ask questions relating to balancing your wellbeing and grad school.

We are introducing a new ALES-GSA Mentorship Program that is designed to bridge the gap between new/inexperienced students and experienced students/professionals in the faculty.

If you are new to your program, the faculty, or Canada, you can sign up for a mentor to help guide you through your program.

If you are a graduate student eager to give back or have words of wisdom to guide a new student through their academic life, you can sign up to become a mentor!

This is a great opportunity for both mentors and mentees to share academic growth, life experiences, focus and keep connected with one another.

Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity within ALES and the University of Alberta community

ALES GSA on February 12, 2021, held an event covering topics such as Black History Month, International Week for Sustainable Development by the United Nations and to celebrate the International Day of Girls and Women in Science, under the bigger umbrella of EDI.

We had the pleasure of hosting representatives from the Black Students' Association and the International Students' Association, welcomed by the President of the University of Alberta, Bill Flanagan, and in an open discussion with the Dean and Vice Dean of ALES, Dr. Blade and Dr. Adamowicz.
